Inbound Placement Split Breakeven Calculator
Every restock forces the same choice: pay Amazon's inbound placement fee and ship to one destination, or split the shipment across more warehouses and pay extra freight. Enter the placement fees from your shipment screen and your freight quotes — the calculator totals each option, names the cheapest, and shows the freight threshold where splitting stops paying.

Placement split: pro tips
- Always pull the fees from your actual shipment screen. Amazon's inbound placement fee varies with box size and weight — a $0.10/unit difference across 5,000 units is $500 you either save or miss. Never plan from remembered numbers.
- Compare per-unit, not just the totals. Divide each option's total by your unit count. The cheapest shipment isn't always the cheapest per unit when freight quotes are close, and per-unit is the number that feeds your pricing.
- Watch the freight threshold on the no-fee option. Sending to 4–5 destinations skips the placement fee, but only wins while the multi-destination freight quote stays close to the others. If your forwarder raises that quote past the calculator's threshold, paying the placement fee becomes the cheaper choice.
Why compare Amazon inbound placement fees before every restock?
Amazon inbound placement fees run roughly $0.27–$1.10 per unit, and on a 5,000-unit shipment the difference between the cheapest and priciest split can run into thousands of dollars a year. Most sellers pick a split by habit — then never check whether the freight math still favors it.
The comparison is simple but easy to skip: units times the Amazon inbound placement service fee (also called the Amazon inventory placement fee or FBA inbound placement service fee), plus the freight quote for that split. Run it before every restock — freight quotes move, and the winning option moves with them. New here? What is Amazon placement fee exactly — and what is FBA inbound placement service fee? They are the same per-unit charge under two names: the fee for shipping to fewer Amazon warehouses instead of splitting the shipment yourself.
How do I find my cheapest placement split?
Three numbers per option, one clear winner:
- Enter your units per shipment and the Amazon FBA placement fee per unit for the minimal and partial splits (shown on the shipment screen in Seller Central).
- Enter your freight quotes for shipping to 1, 2–3, and 4–5 destinations. Leave any option blank to skip it.
- Hit Calculate to see the total cost of each option side by side.
- Take the cheapest option — and note the breakeven threshold, so you know when a better freight quote would flip the answer.
